Sea of Thieves has just crossed a new milestone on Steam after celebrating 25 million players in October. Rare’s pirate game has now sold over 5 million copies on Valve’s platform, which is quite impressive for a game released back in 2018 and which has been available on Xbox Game Pass since day one.
To celebrate this new milestone, Sea of Thieves players can get the free All Together Now! emote for free if they launch the game until December 29, and the game is also 50% off on Steam for a limited time. Sea of Thieves supports cross-platform multiplayer with Xbox and the Microsoft Store, and the game receives free content updates quite frequently.

It’s very rare for Microsoft to share hard data about video game sales, and the company didn’t reveal how many copies Sea of Thieves sold on the Microsoft Store for Xbox and Windows PCs. Sea of Thieves didn’t come on Steam until June 3, 2020, but the game only needed a little more than a year to sell over 5M copies on Valve’s platform.
Not so long ago, most of Microsoft’s PC games were exclusive to the Microsoft Store on Windows, but the company changed its approach to gaming in 2019 by making its Xbox first-party games available in multiple stores. Gears 5, Halo: MCC, and the Age of Empires franchise were some of the first big names to land on Steam, and recent games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, and Halo Infinite also launched on Valve’s platform on day one.
Overall, Microsoft games seem to enjoy a lot of momentum on Steam with Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, Halo: MCC, and Halo Infinite being among the top sellers as of this writing. Embracing other game stores two years ago really helped Microsoft to be taken seriously as a PC game publisher, and Steam remains the most popular PC gaming platform by far even though the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store were first to reduce their cut on game sales to 12%.
