Microsoft has begun informing users that support for the Microsoft Teams app will soon end on smartphones and tablets running the Android 5, Android 6, and Android 7 operating systems.
The end of support for Android 5 devices will begin in March 2022, Android 6 in July 2022, and Android 7 in September 2022.
Here’s the full details:
- Android 5 – The retirement of Android 5 will start in early March (3/1/2022) and complete by mid-March
- Android 6 – The retirement of Android 6 will start in early July (7/1/2022) and complete by mid-July. There will be no active development and bug fixes for this OS version after that, but we will continue to provide last supported version in the play store till September 2022.
- Android 7 – The retirement of Android 7 will start in early September (9/1/2022) and complete by mid-Sept. There will be no active development and bug fixes on the build after that, but we will continue to provide last supported version in the play store till December 2022.
Microsoft’s official advice for users still using these older Android operating systems is to, as you may have guessed, to upgrade to a newer operating system. The notification also mentions that Microsoft will soon start prompting those running versions of the app that are over a year old to update to the latest version.
Amusingly, the announcement also has a rather fun typo in its opening paragraph where it mistakenly says support is ending for iOS 5, 6, and 7 and advises users to upgrade to Android. The rest of the announcement makes it clear that it should be Android 5, 6, and 7 however.
