Set in Seattle during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimi follows a tech worker with agoraphobia discovering what may be a recording of a violent crime while she’s reviewing data. Stalled by endless bureaucratic dead-ends with her employer, she has to face her fears and venture out to get to the bottom of things.

Hellblazers (2022)
Tubi — January 21
Tubi, one of the top free streaming services, isn’t well known for its originals. It does produce and distribute some titles exclusively, though. A recent pick worth checking out is Hellblazers, an action horror indie with big names like Bruce Dern, Billy Zane, Tony Todd, and Adrienne Barbeau.
A mysterious cult summons a demon in a small southwestern town, and soon the townsfolk have to contend with hell on earth and the people trying to usher it in. Check out this schlocky little genre film if you want some gruesome fun.
Roger & Me (1989)
The Criterion Channel — January 24
Michael Moore rewrote the rules of documentary in his debut feature, blending fly-on-the-wall reportage with the in-your-face activism he’s become known for with his later work like Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11.

Watch Moore in 1989 as he takes on General Motors. The local economy of Flint, Michigan, was devastated when GM CEO Roger Smith elected to close several auto plants. Moore tries to seek the businessman out and confront him about the decision, all the while offering a portrait of his own hometown and its people.
Malignant (2021)
HBO Max — January 27
A 2021 sleeper hit, James Wan’s Malignant puzzled many viewers with its odd mix of tones and styles. A dark and twisted horror film, Malignant also has moments of outrageous humor and camp, and if you give in to what’s it’s doing, you’re in for a hell of a ride.

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster (2021)
Shudder — January 27
Boris Karloff has had an iconic presence in cinema history, though you may not immediately recognize him. His biggest role had him ambling around in heavy makeup and prosthetics as Frankenstein’s monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, and its many sequels.
This documentary on Shudder traces his 60-year career, offering insights and insider knowledge. It includes interviews with industry-heavyweights like Guillermo del Toro, Roger Corman, and many others.
Home Team (2022)
Netflix — January 28
Produced by funnyman Adam Sandler and starring his friend Kevin James, Home Team is a sports comedy based on the real-life suspension of New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Nightmare Alley (2021)
Hulu — February 1
One of the best films of 2021, Nightmare Alley came out on the same day as Spider-Man: No Way Home and amid the rising threat of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. The film wasn’t able to garner much attention as a result. It’s a shame because it’s not only one of the best of the year but also among director Guillermo del Toro’s finest films. Now, it may finally get the attention it deserves as it becomes available on Hulu.
A carnival worker sees his chance to make it big with a mentalism act. He breaks off on his own with the woman he loves, but he soon finds himself getting deeper and deeper into his con, making enemies with powerful, dangerous people.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
Paramount Plus — February 1
“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” So goes one of the most famous lines in Hollywood history, in one of the finest westerns of the studio era. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance helped redefine the genre and remains a high benchmark. John Ford’s unflinching look at the mythology of the old west feels as relevant today as ever.
Senator Ransom Stoddard returns to the small town where his political career began. With the arrival of a railroad reshaping what was once the frontier, he thinks back to his early days, standing up to the town ruffian, Liberty Valance. While the myth of his heroism is known everywhere, only he and his now-deceased friend Tom Doniphon know what really happened. But sometimes the legend is more useful than the truth.
Paramount Plus
Paramount Plus includes thousands of movies and TV shows from CBS, Showtime, and Paramount Pictures. It also includes new and original movies like The Good Fight, Infinite, and more.
Do the Right Thing (1989)
Peacock — February 1
One of Spike Lee’s best and most celebrated films, Do the Right Thing follows a day in the life of Mookie, a resident of New York’s Bed-Stuy neighborhood, during a heatwave. Tensions are running high as folks try to beat the heat, and Mookie is right at the center of a simmering conflict between a local Italian pizza shop owner and the Black residents of the neighborhood fed up with his disrespect.
The film’s racial themes sadly remain relevant today, with gentrification and rising anti-Black racism driving home the film’s message of injustice and its depiction of community. Lee is a legend of American cinema, and Do the Right Thing is no small part of that legacy.
Peacock
NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service offers a lot of great movies and TV shows to stream on demand, along with live news and sports. Best of all, you can watch lots of its content for free, or watch all of it with a paid subscription starting at just $4.99 a month.
A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
Amazon Prime Video — February 1
The first part of Sergio Leone’s “Man with No Name” trilogy, A Fistful of Dollars was the subject of major legal disputes. The film is effectively an unlicensed remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and a prime example of the blurred lines between American westerns and Japanese samurai films. The film remains a defining entry in the spaghetti western tradition, one of Clint Eastwood’s breakout roles, and a terrifically fun time at the movies.
When a lone drifter wanders into a small border town, he’s enlisted in a generations-long war between two families. Looking out only for himself, he plays the two families against each other, all the while pocketing money from all sides.
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Netflix — February 1
Perhaps the best entry in the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Ultimatum offered long-awaited answers in Bourne’s fight against Treadstone. It also cemented Paul Greengrass as the premier Bourne director in his second outing.
Jason Bourne remains on the run following the events of The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. When Bourne’s path crosses that of a Guardian reporter, he may finally have the last pieces of the puzzle to find out what happened to him and who’s been pulling the strings in this explosive finale.

But the dream was soon over. By the end, they found themselves taken for all they were worth by a prolific conman.
This true-crime documentary, a Netflix original, follows the wronged women as they band together to discover the Tinder Swindler’s true identity and get back what he took from them.
The Beta Test (2021)
Hulu — February 4
A Hollywood agent takes part in an adultery scheme in which he can have an anonymous encounter with no strings attached. Afterward, he’s left obsessed with the mystery woman’s identity. He’s also paranoid about his marriage and the people who invited him to cheat on his wife in the first place.
After films like Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow, Jim Cummings is one of the most exciting new American indie filmmakers. With 2021’s The Beta Test, he once again proves that he’s an original new voice in cinema, taking on the Hollywood machine and all the abuse and hypocrisy that comes with it. The Beta Test is one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week.
Never Been Kissed (1999)

A reporter who had a terrible time in high school seizes a second chance at popularity and happiness in this classic 90s teen rom-com. Josey Geller goes undercover when she’s assigned a piece reporting on the lifestyles of teens. Juggling fitting in with a budding romance with her new English teacher (yes, it’s as uncomfortable as it sounds), Josie has to prepare for when she goes back to her normal life.
Touching, silly, and funny, Never Been Kissed is a crowd pleaser and a refreshing blast from the past. Check it out on Disney Plus.
