Dynabook has announced new Portégé X30L, X30W, and X40L laptops powered by Intel’s 12th Gen “Alder Lake” processors (CPU). This news comes as Dynabook is in the process of revamping its Portégé laptop lineup, bringing it in line with modern Ultrabooks that use thin and light form factors. These laptops are generally sized at 13 and 14 inches, and they include notebook and convertible designs. With extra security features and durability testing, they could potentially make the cut of the best business laptops.

The Portégé X30L-K is a 13.3-inch non-convertible laptop that’s lightweight but durable. Its magnesium-alloy chassis — which has undergone MIL-STD-810H durability certification — weighs in at just 1.99 pounds (904g) and measures 0.7 inches (17.9mm) thin. It has a backlit keyboard with Accupoint pointing nub (similar to Lenovo’s TrackPoint), as well as a sizable touchpad. For security measures there’s a fingerprint reader, IR camera and privacy shutter, lock slot, and optional smart card reader. The laptop has a TPM 2.0 chip and it’s classified as a Windows Secured-core PC.

There are three 13.3-inch displays available for the X30L-K. All have a 1920×1080 (FHD) resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The basic non-touch display has 250 nits brightness, and there’s a touch option with 300 nits brightness. If you want the best picture possible, you’ll want to go with the IGZO display with 470 nits brightness.

Ports are generous despite the laptop’s thin design. There are two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A 3.2 (Gen 1), HDMI, RJ45 Ethernet, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack.

The Portégé X30W-K is essentially a convertible sibling of the X30L-K, capable of being used in tent, stand, and tablet modes. It weighs just a bit more at 2.18 pounds (989g) but it’s still about 0.7 inches (17.9mm) thin. It has also undergone MIL-STD-810H durability testing and it’s available in the same Mystic Blue Metallic color. Ports are slightly different, with just one USB-A and no Ethernet. The same security measures are in play, save for the optional smart card reader.

There is just one 13.3-inch FHD touch display option available for the X30W-K. It supports inking (and tilt support) with the included Dynabook TruPen, and it uses Gorilla Glass for added durability. Dolby Atmos is included for the stereo speakers.

Both new Portégé X30 laptops have similar 12th Gen Intel Core CPU options, with up to a Core i7-1280P vPro chip. Both can also have up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. A 53Wh battery is available in each laptop. As for wireless, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 come standard.

The Portégé X30L-K will start at about $1,380, while the convertible Portégé X30W-K will start at $1,600. Both laptops come with three years of Dynabook +Care Service Warranty that includes on-site support. No word on availability.

Dynabook has also announced the Intel Evo-certified Portégé X40L-K using a completely new design. It’s the lightest 14-inch laptop Dynabook has ever produced, weighing in at 2.31 pounds (1.05kg) and measuring 0.63 inches (15.9mm) thin. It offers plenty of ports despite its size, including two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A 3.2 (Gen 1), RJ45 Ethernet, HDMI, microSD card reader, and 3.5mm audio combo jack.

Top-firing quad speakers with Dolby Atmos flank the spill-resistant, backlit keyboard, and a massive touchpad is centered below. The front-facing 720p camera is joined by an IR camera and shutter, plus there’s a fingerprint reader, lock slot, and TPM 2.0 chip. This is also a Microsoft Secured-core PC.

The real attraction here is the 14-inch IPS display with 16:10 aspect ratio. It has a 1920×1200 (FHD+) resolution and EyeSafe certification to help protect your eyes. The X40L-K is powered by up to a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1280P vPro CPU, 32GB of LPDDR5 dual-channel RAM, a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, and a 65Wh battery.

The Portégé X40L-K will start at $1,800 and comes with three years of Dynabook +Care Service Warranty, which includes on-site support. No word on availability.

Rounding out Dynabook’s March 3 announcements is a new Thunderbolt 4 docking station with 15 total ports. The front of the dock has an SD card reader, two USB-C 3.2 (Gen 2), USB-A 3.2 (Gen 2), and a 3.5mm audio combo jack. The back of the dock — which is used horizontally — includes three USB-A 3.2 (Gen 2), RJ45 Ethernet, two DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0, one downstream Thunderbolt 4, a host Thunderbolt 4, and the AC adapter port.

A lock slot on the side adds some security for busy offices, and the other side has a power button. The dock supports MAC address passthrough and PXE boot with Dynabook laptops, as well as Wake-on-LAN features. It’s capable of handling five external displays, maxing out at 8K at a 30Hz refresh rate. The dock will cost about $350 and comes with a three-year warranty.
