ASR Voice Recorder is one of the more competent voice recorder apps. It records in a variety of formats, including popular ones like MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, and M4A. There is also cloud integration for easy upload to Dropbox, Google Drive and others. You get a bunch of smaller features, like playback speed controls, the ability to automatically skip silent parts of a recording, a gain switch, and support for Bluetooth devices. It’s a surprisingly strong offering for its price tag.
Dolby On is one of the newer voice recorder apps on the list. You can record a lot more with it, but the tools help those recording voices as well. The app includes various boosts and filters to improve sound quality. Additionally, it has an above average audio editor for after the recording ends if you need such a thing. Some of the filters include noise reduction, de-essing, and even a fade in and out effect. It’s mostly for musicians, but it’s also quite good for voice memos and other such things. It’s also entirely free with no ads making it one of the truly great free voice recorder apps.
Easy Voice Recorder
Price: Free / $3.99
Easy Voice Recorder does what the name suggests. It provides an easy method to record things with your phone. You open the app, hit the mic button, record, share as needed, and then close the app. It also has a few additional features, like the ability to change what kind of file type you record to. It also has widget support. The pro version also includes support for stereo recording, Bluetooth microphone support, and more. The pro version also removes the advertising from the free version.
Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder

Hi-Q is one of the more powerful voice recorder apps out there. It records in MP3. That makes the sound files compatible with virtually everything. Along with that, you can have it upload automatically to Dropbox once recording finishes. It also comes with widget support, the ability to choose which mic on your device you want to use (assuming you have more than one), support for Wi-Fi transfer, gain control, and more. The paid version adds a few more features as well. The only downside is that it doesn’t support phone call recording.
LectureNotes
Price: $5.99 + $1.99
LectureNotes is one of the best apps for college students. It does a lot of stuff. You can take notes, organize those notes, and use them later for your homework. The app doesn’t record audio natively. However, there is a plugin for $1.99 that adds that functionality. Additionally, it lets you record stuff while you use the regular LectureNotes app. That makes it an excellent one-two combo for, well, lectures. You can also get a plugin for recording videos as well. It’s also $1.99. It’s a bit of a heavy package. Thus, we don’t recommend this for people looking for a simple, lightweight recorder. However, if you’re college, this is about as good as it gets.

Neutron Audio Recorder

Neutron Audio Recorder is from the developers of Neutron Music Player, one of the best music players available. As such, the voice recorder is also very good. It includes the usual stuff like recording and playback along with other options like that. This one also includes some recording enhancements such as automatic gain correction, a 60-band equalizer, and a DSP filter. The result is some of the cleanest audio your microphone can pick up. It even supports Android Auto and playlists. It’s a little expensive at $7.99, but that’s a single price tag and the feature list is much longer than what we’ve written here. It’s very good overall.

Otter Voice Notes

Otter is a voice recorder for professionals. Its feature set is mostly for business meetings and other more serious matters. It does the basics like recording, sharing, and playback. It also includes a transcription service, cloud storage, cross-platform support, and it even supports stuff like photos. The free version includes 600 minutes of transcription per month. The premium subscription offers over 6,000. It’s also not half bad for lectures and students get a discount to $2.99 per month if they want to go that route. It’s very powerful, but only if you really need stuff like cloud storage, transcriptions, and more powerful stuff like that.
Smart Recorder
Price: Free / $1.49
Smart Recorder is one of the best voice recorder apps, even among its peers. It comes with all of the usual features, including cloud storage support and various recording features. However, you also get the small stuff like skipping silences in the track, sensitivity controls, adjustable sample rates, and more. It gets frequent updates and it rocks a 4.5 rating on Google Play at the time of this writing. It’s one of the good ones and the premium version is cheap too. This one is also free if you use Google Play Pass.
Voice Recorder Pro
Price: Free / $1.99
Thankfully, Voice Recorder Pro is a better app than its bland name would imply. It is a fully-featured app that likes to keep it simple. You’ll be able to record in PCM (Wave), AAC, and AMR which gives you a good variety of options. On top of that, the interface is easy to use, files are easy to find and manage, and this can be used to record phone calls (if its device and OS supported). It also has other features such as a bitrate option and much more. It’s one of the more serviceable and simple voice recorder apps. This one is also free if you use Google Play Pass.

The voice recorder apps on your phone are no slouch. For starters, they are always free. They’re also already installed so it won’t take up any more of your storage. They’re generally simple with the basic features. However, for some devices, like LG’s V-series phones, the voice recorder app may tap into hardware features of the phone that third party voice recorder apps simply cannot do. We also hear Google’s new voice recorder app is pretty good. In any case, we recommend trying out the stock voice recorder on any device before you go third party just to make sure you’re not missing out on some awesome features.
