The best NEW Android games from September 2021:

Beatstar

Price: Free to play

Beatstar is a new rhythm game. It plays like many other rhythm games. You use a combination of taps and swipes to hit the notes as they play. Beatstar uses a three-lane setup so you can play with your first three fingers. The claim to fame with Beatstar is the use of pop hits rather than random techno beats. You can play popular songs by a variety of artists. As you play, you unlock loot chests with various items in them. You can’t play if your box slots are full and we’re not big fans of that bottleneck. Otherwise, it’s a good mobile rhythm game that stacks up well to its competitors.

Final Fantasy IV

Price: $17.99

Final Fantasy IV is the second remaster of the game for mobile phones. The first was the 3D remaster and now this one, which is a 2D pixel remaster. Square Enix modernized the game quite a bit with smoother animations, higher definition pixel art, and other little touches like higher drop rates for super rare items. In addition, there are some mobile control differences, like a tap-to-move function and an auto-battle system. Unlike the 3D remaster, this seems to follow the SNES version of the game. That means it’s faster and easier to play through. There isn’t controller support, one of only a few sore spots on an otherwise polished experience. I didn’t experience any of the bugs I read about, but there are enough complaints to say that they’re there. It’s a bit pricy and the pixel art is the subject of debate for some fans of the game. It’s otherwise a good overall experience.

The Heroic Legend of Eagarlnia

Price: $4.99

The Heroic Legend of Eagarlnia is a grand strategy game. For those who don’t know, a grand strategy game is a city management simulator where you overwatch an entire city. Players are tasked with the job of running a whole city. That includes assigning workers to perform duties, conduct expeditions for relics and weapons, acquire heroes for use in war, and other stuff. There is a story and it’s actually not half bad. The world has five different races, a variety of troop types, and more. Eventually, you’ll work on conquering the world. The game runs for $4.99 with no in-app purchases or ads. This is one of those premium games that won’t get as many downloads as it deserves.

MARVEL Future Revolution

Price: Free to play

MARVEL Future Revolution is an open-world action RPG. It’s basically and MMORPG. Players embark on a bunch of quests, explore an open world, and engage with a bunch of NPCs. The combat system is a little boring as most of it is doable with auto-battle. The game makes up for it with decent co-op play, good graphics, and smooth animations (for the most part). The game is fun to play as a time-waster, but doesn’t bring the same charm as a good MMORPG. In other words, it’s fine as long for some, but maybe not for others. The biggest complaint is the microtransactions. The game encourages players to buy stuff heavily, frequently, and early. That’s not a good look so hopefully developers tune that before people forget about this game.

Mega Man X Dive Mobile

Price: Free to play

Mega Man X Dive Mobile is a 2D platformer and shooter just like most other Mega Man games. It features smooth graphics, customizable controls, and even a co-op story mode. There is also online PvP, but the matchmaking system is honestly pretty bad. Otherwise, the game is pretty pleasant. It feels and looks like a Mega Man game. There are multiple characters you can choose to play with and there is even controller support if you want it. The game takes a while to play due to the long grind you see in most free-to-play games. It has its flaws, but none of them are all that bad except maybe the aforementioned PvP.

Murders on Budapest

Price: Free / $3.99

Murders on Budapest is the latest game from Buff Studio, developer of Buff Knight, 7Days, and Underworld Office. This one is a mystery game with visual novel and puzzle elements. There is a murder and you must find out who did it. The actions and choices you make dictate the flow of the game. There are also multiple endings based on how you play. The controls in the game are fairly simple. You’ll spend the majority of your time looking at images and reading text. Obviously, those looking for an intense game won’t enjoy this one. Those who enjoy a calmer, story-driven mystery, on the other hand, should enjoy this quite a bit. The game plays fine. Most of the complaints are about the game’s ads, but you can remove them by buying the premium version.

Northgard

Price: $8.99

Northgard is a strategy game with some survival game elements. Players wind up on the shores of Northgard, a hostile place with harsh winters. You must survive the elements, build a base to defend against bad guys, and expand your budding empire. The game has 11 chapters in the story and six clans to play with. There are also achievements, cloud saving, and the delightful experience of having no microtransactions since this is a premium game. The UI is decent, if a little cramped on smaller screens. It also tends to be a bit choppy and laggy on lower-end devices. The developer is adding more and more optimizations so it’s actually much better now than it was at launch.

Purrfect Tale

Price: Free to play

Purrfect Tale is a visual novel game. It involves a cutesy tale of your cat turning into a human. There is a love spark there and things progress accordingly. Like most visual novels, the decisions you make affect how things play out in the game. For the most part, you’ll be making dialog decisions and doing things like choosing what to wear. There is virtually no challenge to this game which is fine. Not every game needs to be full of action. The game is a bit laggy, even on newer devices. The developers definitely need to optimize and squash bugs a little bit. It’s not too bad if you’re into cutesy stuff.

SpongeBob’s Idle Adventures

Price: Free to play

SpongeBob’s Idle Adventures is yet another attempt by a developer to cash in on a big name with the idle game genre. It could be worse. You run the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket. There are various characters from the show to hire as employees and, as per the nature of idle games, you earn more money as you level things up. It draws some other gameplay elements from the idle genre, but you get the gist in general. The app is online only and supported by ads. Those aren’t great aspects of the game. Everything else is pretty decent as long as you’re a fan of the genre. If you’re not, we don’t recommend this game to you. It’s not different enough from other idle games to recommend it to non-idle gamers.

World Flipper

Price: Free

World Flipper is an RPG fused with a pinball game. It’s a lot like those games that use match-3 mechanics to attack, but it uses pinball instead. The game otherwise plays like an RPG. You explore the world, meet new people, defeat the bad guys, and find loot. The storyline is pretty decent and the characters have a sense of humor. It’s nice to see a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The big draw, though, is the pinball combat. You launch stuff around to produce your attacks. There are also some combos and other neat things. It’s actually a surprisingly solid game without a ton of bugs. The only real issue I ran into is the not-so-great localization.
