Elden Ring: How to get the Moonveil katana

Katanas are very powerful in Elden Ring, but without a doubt, the strongest one in the game is Moonveil. This ornate blade dishes out incredible damage, can build up the Bleed status effect, and has the ability to launch fast and heavy-hitting magic projectiles when you use its weapon art. Provided you have enough stats to use it and have built your character around the stats that Moonveil scales with best, this weapon will carry you all the way through your playthrough.

But how do you actually get the Moonveil? It’s in a relatively hidden location and requires you to take down a boss, but don’t worry. In this guide, we’ll go over everything you need to know about obtaining Moonveil, including where it’s located, how to defeat the boss guarding it, and what its stat requirements, scaling, and best usage strategies are.

How to get Moonveil in Elden Ring

To get the Moonveil katana in Elden Ring, you’ll first need to travel to northwestern Caelid, directly south of the road that leads into the region from Limgrave. There, near a small camp of Radahn Soldiers, you’ll find the entrance to Gael Tunnel. Progress through this dungeon until you encounter the Magma Wyrm miniboss.

While this boss looks imposing, it’s actually much easier to take down than you would think. It only attacks by attempting to bowl itself into you, breathe fire at you, or swing a large sword at you. These attacks deal a lot of damage, but are also very telegraphed and easy to dodge. It also takes a fairly long time for the Magma Wyrm to attack you again after it misses you, so lay into it with as many attacks as possible while you have good opportunities to do so. Once the Magma Wyrm dies, it will drop Moonveil for you.

Elden Ring Moonveil requirements, scaling, and usage

Moonveil can be used with a number of different builds, but it’s best suited for a Dexterity/Intelligence hybrid character since it requires 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, and 23 Intelligence. In terms of scaling, the Moonveil has E Strength scaling, D Dexterity scaling, and C Intelligence scaling at its base level, but when upgraded, it features B scaling for both Dexterity and Intelligence.

The Moonveil does excellent damage compared to other Dexterity/Intelligence weapons, and since its attacks are quick, you can put out a ton of DPS using it aggressively against enemies, bosses, and players in PvP. It also builds up the Bleed status effect relatively quickly as you hit opponents with it, resulting in excellent bonus damage once you proc Bleed.

Note that the Moonveil also has great range due to how large of a katana it is. Additionally, its Transient Moonlight weapon art lets you dish out damage beyond melee range by launching horizontal or vertical arcs of magic at enemies that deal heavy damage and can quickly stagger many bosses or opponents attempting to block damage with a shield. These magic arcs are particularly deadly in PvP, as they’re hard to dodge and travel incredibly quickly. This makes it one of the best Elden Ring weapons to use when fighting other players.
