TL;DR

  • Android 12L could “soon” come to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
  • The OS optimized for larger screens would add plenty of nifty features to the foldable phone.
  • Google has also announced a developer preview for the Lenovo P12 Pro tablet.

Google recently announced Android 12L, a version of Android better suited to devices with larger displays. The company also confirmed a developer preview would soon arrive for the Lenovo P12 Pro tablet with the reveal. Now, it seems that one of the first foldables to receive this OS refresh could be the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Per a report by 9to5Google, Android 12L will “soon” be available for the Samsung foldable, adding a slew of software features to the phone in the process. This includes smarter multitasking support with intelligent split-screen handling and improved compatibility for apps not yet optimized for large screens. Apps that are optimized will be highlighted in the Google Play Store in Android 12L, too. If you’re curious how this feature will work, you can give Android 12L a whirl using the official Android emulator.

When is Android 12L heading to the Galaxy Z Fold 3?

While Samsung and Google haven’t announced an official launch date for Android 12L on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the update may coincide with One UI 4‘s forthcoming beta release in South Korea. Samsung’s new UI is based on Android 12 beta, so it would be the perfect environment to test new features.

Thanks to Google’s official timeline, we know that Android 12L will see at least three beta builds between December 2021 and February 2022 after the Developer preview debuts this month. A final release to AOSP is penned for Q1 2022.
